ܘܗܘܐ ܦܬܓܡܗ ܕܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܥܠ ܟܠܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܢܦܩ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܠܐܘܪܥܐ ܕܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܠܩܪܒܐ ܘܫܪܘ ܥܠ ܟܐܦܐ ܕܥܘܕܪܢܐ ܘܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܫܪܘ ܒܐܦܩ

The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

ܘܐܣܬܕܪܘ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܠܘܩܒܠ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܗܘܐ ܩܪܒܐ ܘܐܬܬܒܪ ܐܝܣܪܐܝܠ ܩܕܡ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܘܐܬܩܛܠܘ ܒܣܕܪܐ ܒܚܩܠܐ ܐܝܟ ܐܪ̈ܒܥܐ ܐ̈ܠܦܝܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܝܢ

The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel. When they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.

ܘܐܬܐ ܥܡܐ ܠܡܫܪܝܬܐ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܣܒ̈ܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܠܡܢܐ ܬܒܪܢ ܡܪܝܐ ܝܘܡܢܐ ܩܕܡ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܢܕܒܪ ܠܢ ܡܢ ܫܝܠܘ ܩܒܘܬܐ ܕܩܝܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܨܒܐܘܬ ܘܬܐܙܠ ܒܝܢܬܢ ܘܬܦܪܩܢ ܡܢ ܐܝܕܐ ܕܒ̈ܥܠܕܒܒܝܢ

When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has Yahweh defeated us today before the Philistines? Let’s get the ark of Yahweh’s covenant out of Shiloh and bring it to us, that it may come among us and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”

ܘܫܕܪܘ ܥܡܐ ܠܫܝܠܘ ܘܫܩܠܘ ܡܢ ܬܡܢ ܩܒܘܬܐ ܕܩܝܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܨܒܐܘܬ ܝܬ̇ܒ ܟܪ̈ܘܒܐ ܘܬܡܢ ܬܪ̈ܝܢ ܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܥܠܝ ܥܡ ܩܒܘܬܐ ܕܩܝܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܚܦܢܝ ܘܦܝܢܚܝܣ

So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of Armies, who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

ܘܗܘܐ ܕܟܕ ܐܬܬ ܩܒܘܬܐ ܕܩܝܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܠܡܫܪܝܬܐ ܝܒܒܘ ܟܠܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܝܘܒܒܐ ܪܒܐ ܘܐܫܬܓܫܬ ܐܪܥܐ

When the ark of Yahweh’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded.

ܘܫܡܥܘ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܩܠܐ ܕܝܘܒܒܐ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܡܢܘ ܩܠܐ ܗܢܐ ܕܝܘܒܒܐ ܒܡܫܪܝܬܐ ܕܥܒܪ̈ܝܐ ܘܝܕܥܘ ܕܩܒܘܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܐܬܬ ܠܡܫܪܝܬܐ
lmshryth' 'thth dmry' dqbwthh wydew debry' bmshryth' dywbb' hn' ql' mnw w'mrw dywbb' ql' plshthy' wshmew
When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that Yahweh’s ark had come into the camp.

ܘܕܚܠܘ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܡܪܝܢ ܐܬܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܠܡܫܪܝܬܐ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܘܝ ܠܢ ܕܠܐ ܗܘܬ ܐܝܟ ܗܕܐ ܡܢ ܐܬܡܠܝ ܘܡܢ ܡܢܬܡܠܝ

The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.

ܘܝ ܠܢ ܡܢܘ ܢܦܨܝܢ ܡܢ ܐ̈ܝܕܝ ܐܠܗܐ ܥܫܝܢܐ ܗܢܘ ܐܠܗܐ ܕܡܚܐ ܠܟܠܗ̇ ܡܨܪܝܢ ܒܟܘܠ ܡܚ̈ܘܢ ܒܡܕܒܪܐ
bmdbr' mkhwn bkwl mtsryn lklh dmkh' 'lh' hnw eshyn' 'lh' 'ydy mn nptsyn mnw ln wy
Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

ܐܬܚܝܠܘ ܘܗܘܘ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܕܠܡܐ ܬܦܠܚܘܢ ܠܥܒܪ̈ܝܐ ܐܝܟ ܕܦܠܚܘܟܘܢ ܘܗܘܘ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܘܐܬܟܬܫܘ ܥܡܗܘܢ

Be strong and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!”

ܘܐܬܟܬܫܘ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܥܡ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܐܬܬܒܪ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܥܪܩܘ ܐܢܫ ܠܡܫܟܢܗ ܘܗܘܬ ܡܚܘܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܕܛܒ ܒܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܢܦܠܘ ܡܢ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܒܝܘܡܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܬܠܬܝܢ ܐ̈ܠܦܝܢ ܪ̈ܓܠܝܝܢ

The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.

ܘܩܒܘܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܐܬܕܒܪܬ ܘܬܪ̈ܝܢ ܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܥܠܝ ܡܝܬܘ ܚܦܢܝ ܘܦܝܢܚܝܣ

God’s ark was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

ܘܪܗܛ ܓܒܪܐ ܡܢ ܕܒܝܬ ܒܢܝܡܝܢ ܡܢ ܣܕܪܐ ܘܐܬܐ ܠܫܝܠܘ ܒܝܘܡܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܟܕ ܡܨܪܝܢ ܢܚ̈ܬܘܗܝ ܘܐܕܡܬܐ ܒܪܝܫܗ

A man of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.

ܘܥܠܝ ܝܬ̇ܒ ܗܘܐ ܥܠ ܟܘܪܣܝܐ ܥܠ ܝܕ ܐܘܪܚܐ ܘܚܐܪ ܗܘܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܙܐܥ ܗܘܐ ܠܒܗ ܥܠ ܩܒܘܬܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܘܓܒܪܐ ܐܬܐ ܠܡܚܘܝܘ ܒܩܪܝܬܐ ܘܐܝܠܠܬ ܟܠܗ̇ ܩܪܝܬܐ

When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for God’s ark. When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out.

ܘܫܡܥ ܥܠܝ ܩܠܐ ܕܐܝܠܠܬܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܡܢܘ ܩܠܐ ܕܕܠܘܚܝܐ ܗܢܐ ܘܓܒܪܐ ܣܪܗܒ ܘܐܬܐ ܘܚܘܝ ܠܥܠܝ

When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.

ܘܥܠܝ ܒܪ ܫܒܥܝܢ ܗܘܐ ܘܬܡܢܐ ܫ̈ܢܝܢ ܘܥܝ̈ܢܘܗܝ ܐܝܩܪ ܘܠܐ ܡܫܟܚ ܗܘܐ ܠܡܚܙܐ
lmkhz' hw' mshkkh wl' 'yqr weynwhy shnyn wthmn' hw' shbeyn br wely
Now Eli was ninety-eight years old. His eyes were set, so that he could not see.

ܘܐܡܪ ܓܒܪܐ ܗܘ ܠܥܠܝ ܐܢܐ ܐܬܝܬ ܡܢ ܣܕܪܐ ܘܐܢܐ ܡܢ ܣܕܪܐ ܥܪܩܬ ܐܬܝܬ ܝܘܡܢܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܡܢܘ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܒܪܝ

The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”

ܘܥܢܐ ܡܣܒܪܢܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܥܪܩ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܘܐܦ ܡܚܘܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܗܘܬ ܒܥܡܐ ܘܐܦ ܬܪ̈ܝܢ ܒܢܝ̈ܟ ܡܝܬܘ ܚܦܢܝ ܘܦܝܢܚܣ ܘܩܒܘܬܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܐܬܕܒܪܬ
'thdbrth d'lh' wqbwthh wpynkhs khpny mythw bnyk thryn w'p bem' hwth rbth' mkhwth' w'p plshthy' qdm mn 'ysryl erq w'mr msbrn' wen'
He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and God’s ark has been captured.”

ܘܗܘܐ ܕܟܕ ܐܬܕܟܪܗ̇ ܥܠܝ ܠܩܒܘܬܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܢܦܠ ܡܢ ܟܘܪܣܝܐ ܠܒܣܬܪܗ ܥܠ ܝܕ ܬܪܥܐ ܘܐܬܬܒܪܬ ܦܪܩܬܗ ܘܡܝܬ ܡܛܠ ܕܣܐܒ ܗܘܐ ܓܒܪܐ ܘܝܩܪ ܘܗܘ ܕܢ ܠܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܪ̈ܒܥܝܢ ܫܢ̈ܝܢ

When he made mention of God’s ark, Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

ܘܟܠܬܗ ܐܢܬܬ ܦܝܢܚܝܣ ܒܛܢܐ ܗܘܬ ܘܩܪܝܒܐ ܗܘܬ ܠܡܐܠܕ ܘܟܕ ܫܡܥܬ ܫܡܥܐ ܕܐܬܕܒܪܬ ܩܒܘܬܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܘܡܝܬ ܚܡܘܗ̇ ܘܒܥܠܗ̇ ܒܪܟܬ ܘܝܠܕܬ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܬܗܦܟܘ ܥܠܝܗ ܚ̈ܒܠܝܗ

His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to giving birth. When she heard the news that God’s ark was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her.

ܘܒܫܥܬܐ ܕܡܘܬܗ̇ ܐܡܪ ܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܩ̈ܝܡܢ ܠܥܠ ܡܢܗ̇ ܠܐ ܬܕܚܠܝܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܕܟܪܐ ܝܠܕܬܝ ܘܠܐ ܥܢܬ ܘܠܐ ܐܝܬܝܬ ܥܠ ܒܠܗ̇

About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.

ܘܩܪܬ ܫܡܗ ܕܛܠܝܐ ܝܘܟܒܪ ܘܐܡܪܬ ܥܒܪ ܐܝܩܪܐ ܡܢ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܬܕܒܪܬ ܩܒܘܬܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܘܥܠ ܚܡܘܗ̇ ܘܥܠ ܒܥܠܗ̇

She named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because God’s ark was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
